Many homeowners hear the same promises when they talk to solar companies.
“Solar is free.”
“You’ll never pay a utility bill again.”
“Your system will perform perfectly for 25 years.”
Unfortunately, those statements are often misleading.
After installing solar systems for more than a decade, I want homeowners to understand the truth about solar.
Myth 1: Solar Is Free
Nothing is free.
Solar can absolutely save homeowners money, but installing a solar system still involves equipment, labor, engineering, and permitting.
When companies claim solar is free, they are usually referring to financing structures like leases or power purchase agreements.
Myth 2: Solar Eliminates Your Utility Bill Forever
Solar can dramatically reduce electricity costs, but homeowners should still expect occasional utility charges.
Especially in California where utilities like Pacific Gas and Electric Company operate time-of-use billing structures.
Solar reduces dependence on the grid, but it does not always eliminate it completely.
Myth 3: Solar Systems Require No Maintenance
Solar systems are incredibly reliable, but they still require basic maintenance.
Over time:
Dust accumulates on panels
Inverters eventually wear out
Electrical components may need replacement
That’s why annual maintenance and system monitoring are important.
Key Takeaway
Solar is an amazing technology.
But homeowners deserve honest information, not unrealistic promises.
